EastEnders aired more emotional revelations for George Knight (Colin Salmon) on Wednesday night (March 13) as he discovered the truth about his birth family leaving him devastated.

As fans of the BBC soap will know, George was left convinced he had missed speaking to his birth mother at the trial of his adopted father Eddie Knight (Christopher Fairbank). George had been blackmailed by Eddie into testifying in his favour at his trial murder trial in return for information on his birth mother.

Eddie faces conviction for killing George’s birth father Henry Kofi Asare in a horrifying hate crime decades earlier. However, George could not bring himself to lie that Eddie was not a racist villain and soon exposed him. Afterwards, Eddie revealed he never had information on George’s birth mother.

However, after the hearing George noticed a mysterious older woman (Susan Aderin) at the trial and began to feel she was his birth mother and missed his chance to meet her. In the latest trip to Walford, George asked Johnny Carter (Charlie Suff) to pull some strings to find out just who the woman was.

Johnny found the name and number of the mystery woman confirming her name to be Angela Lawal. George invited Angela to the Queen Vic to speak with him. He questioned if she was his mum.

But Angela soon revealed that she was not George’s birth mother and that his birth mother was called Margaret Abina Asare. She revealed she had been a close friend of Abina’s and they had trained as nurses together, and George’s mother was kind, fierce, and funny.

It was revealed that Abina had focused on her studies as a nurse when she and Henry paid for him to be fostered and couldn’t talk about what had happened due to the hurt of the situation. Suddenly, George tried to accept that his mother didn’t want to see him, but Angela confirmed his worst fear – his mother had died only four months earlier after a long illness and after the discovery of his father’s body.

“George, your mum died four months ago. She was sick for a long time”, Angela said.” She battled, but she passed away. It wasn’t long after they found your dads body. I think the shock, the guilt – it took the fight out of her.”

“Guilt”, George replies, “What was she guilty for?”. Angela continued: “Once they were set up in Ghana and were ready to bring you home, they weren’t allowed back in the country. It was disgusting.”

She then added: “They fought it all the way, for years. They won an appeal, and your dad came over to collect you, but he never came home. Your mum wrote to Eddie, he wrote back and told her that your dad picked you up and left.

“She thought your dad took you and ran off for a new life. She was heartbroken, for herself and for your brothers.”

George’s face then lights up as he discovers he has biological siblings, two younger brothers. However, he tells Angela to leave and states that he doesn’t want to contact them. Moments later, George leaves The Queen Vic and heads into the night.

en trying to find his real mum, but the truth has left him heartbroken

EastEnders’ George Knight learned of some devastating news, as his mother’s true identity was revealed on the BBC soap.

After exposing his adoptive father Eddie Knight for the racist and the killer he was in court, George was desperate to track down a mystery woman he saw there. George believed the woman was his biological mother, who he was separated from when he was a child.

But as his mother’s identity was finally confirmed, there was some tragic news in store with a death confirmed. George was also stunned as he learned the truth about his past and how he remained separated from his parents, before finding out he had two secret brothers.

It all came about as George’s adoptive father Eddie faced trial for the murder of George’s real dad Henry. He had blackmailed George into giving a statement about him in court in his defence, in exchange for information on where he could find his real mum.

After George exposed Eddie to the jury, Eddie confessed he’d lied and he had no information on her. On Wednesday, George managed to track down the woman he’d seen in court, and he asked her if she was his mum

George was saddened to realise this was not the case, as he told her how he knew about Eddie killing Henry to stop his father taking him back to Ghana. It’s then that he heard what happened to his mother, and how Eddie had cruelly lied to her to make her think Henry had fled with George.

The woman identified herself as Angela, a friend and former colleague of George’s mother. Angela revealed George’s mother was a former nurse named Margaret Abina Asare, and after struggling with her studies she and Henry brought George to the UK to be adopted, temporarily, by the Knights.

When Henry and Margaret, known by those who knew her as Abina, tried to get their son back once they were settled in Ghana, they were not allowed to enter the UK. As Angela detailed his parents’ battle to get him back, she confirmed that following an appeal Henry was able to go.

But when Henry and George failed to return, Abina contacted Eddie only to be told in a cruel lie that Henry had collected George, and fled with their son for good. George’s mother believed her husband was never going to return and had run away with their child, so it seems she stopped searching for him.

Angela revealed her friend never stopped thinking about or loving her missing son though, with her hoping he was happy. Angela showed George a picture of his mother, before showing him a picture of his two younger brothers when they were children.

Angela then broke the news to George that his birth mother was dead, and had sadly passed away just four months ago after a long illness – with Angela questioning if the shock and guilt over Henry’s true fate made her lose her fight. She offered to try and locate the brothers and reunite them with George, but the devastated character refused as he struggled to come to terms with the loss and the big news.
